Number base guide

What are number bases?

Decimal is base 10, binary is base 2 and hexadecimal is base 16. Each system represents the same value with different symbols.

Decimal to binary

Binary represents a number using powers of 2. Every group of four bits can also be represented by one hexadecimal digit.

What is hexadecimal used for?

Hexadecimal is used in programming, memory, bytes, colours, protocols and debugging because it compresses groups of four bits.

0b and 0x prefixes

The 0b and 0x prefixes conventionally identify binary and hexadecimal numbers. The tool accepts both prefixes.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about number bases

How do you convert decimal to binary?

Enter the value, select Decimal as the source and Binary as the target.

How do you convert binary to decimal?

Select Binary as the source, enter only 0 and 1, and choose Decimal as the target.

How do you convert hexadecimal to decimal?

Enter digits from 0 to 9 or A to F, select Hexadecimal and convert to Decimal.

How do you convert binary to hexadecimal?

Each group of four bits maps to one hexadecimal digit; the tool converts it automatically.

What does 0xFF mean?

It is the usual notation indicating that FF is written in hexadecimal.

What does 0b1010 mean?

It is the usual notation indicating that 1010 is written in binary.

How many bits are in one hexadecimal digit?

Each hexadecimal digit represents four bits.

What is two's complement?

It represents signed integers using a fixed bit width.

Can negative numbers be converted?

Yes. Normal mode uses a signed mathematical representation; two's complement is optional.

Does it support large integers?

Yes. The browser uses BigInt to avoid the precision loss associated with Number.
