Quick guide

What is ASCII?

ASCII is an encoding standard with 128 values, from 0 to 127. Each standard character has decimal, hexadecimal, octal and binary representations.

Text to ASCII decimal

Each character becomes its decimal value. For example, A is 65 and Hello is 72 101 108 108 111.

ASCII hexadecimal

Hexadecimal is a compact way to write ASCII bytes: A is 41 or 0x41.

ASCII binary

Binary shows each byte in eight bits. A is 01000001.

Printable and control characters

Values 32 to 126 are printable. Values 0 to 31 and 127 are controls, shown with labels such as [TAB], [LF] and [DEL].

ASCII versus Unicode

ASCII contains only 128 values. Unicode covers many more characters: ñ, €, emojis and non-Latin alphabets are not standard ASCII.
