WHOIS guide

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is the traditional protocol for consulting domain registration information, such as dates, statuses and nameservers.

What is RDAP?

RDAP is a newer, structured alternative to WHOIS. This tool tries the official RDAP service for the domain extension first and falls back to a known WHOIS server when necessary.

What information can be shown?

Available public data may include the registrar, creation and expiration dates, EPP statuses, nameservers, DNSSEC and abuse contacts. Registries may redact personal details.

Privacy and redaction

Missing registrant information is often intentional because of privacy policies and data-protection rules such as GDPR.

Frequently asked questions

WHOIS questions

How do I look up a domain’s WHOIS?

Enter a domain or URL and select Look up WHOIS. The tool normalizes the host and queries RDAP or WHOIS.

What information does WHOIS show?

Depending on the registry, it can show the registrar, dates, statuses, nameservers and selected public contacts.

What is RDAP?

RDAP is a structured registration-data protocol designed as a modern alternative to classic WHOIS.

How can I see when a domain expires?

If the registry publishes an expiration event, it appears in the registration details card.

Why is the domain owner not shown?

Personal contact data is commonly redacted because of privacy policies, GDPR and registry rules.

What do statuses such as clientTransferProhibited mean?

They are technical EPP statuses published by the registrar or registry. The original code is kept visible.

Can I know whether a domain is available?

A missing record is not definitive proof of availability. Availability depends on the authoritative registry.

What are nameservers?

Nameservers identify the DNS servers authoritative for a domain’s zone.

Is DNSSEC shown?

It is shown when RDAP publishes a valid DNSSEC delegation state; otherwise the state remains unknown.

Are queried domains stored?

Domains are not stored permanently. A temporary cache may be used for performance and abuse prevention.
