Uppercase B means Byte and lowercase b means bit. For example, 100 Mbps ideally equals 12.5 MB/s.
Unit guide
How do you convert Bytes to KB, MB or GB?
Select the decimal or binary system, enter a value, and choose the source and target units. SI uses powers of 1000; IEC uses powers of 1024.
KB versus KiB
1 KB is 1000 bytes in SI. 1 KiB is 1024 bytes in IEC. Likewise, 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes and 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes.
Bytes versus bits
Bytes are commonly used for file sizes and bits for network speeds. Divide megabits per second by 8 for ideal megabytes per second.
Frequently asked questions
Questions about Bytes and bits
How many bytes are in 1 KB?
1 KB is 1000 bytes in SI and 1 KiB is 1024 bytes in IEC.
How many bytes are in 1 MB?
1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes; 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes.
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
MB uses multiples of 1000 and MiB uses multiples of 1024.
Why can 1 GB be 1000 or 1024 MB?
It depends on whether the decimal SI or binary IEC system is used.
What is the difference between bits and Bytes?
One Byte contains 8 bits. B and b are not interchangeable symbols.
How many MB/s are 100 Mbps?
Under ideal conditions, 100 Mbps divided by 8 is 12.5 MB/s.
Are entered values stored?
